Tax Rate For Tesla Vehicles In Malaysia
Current Status (Tax Holiday)
Currently, all fully electric vehicles (EVs) in Malaysia, including Teslas, enjoy a Road Tax Exemption until 31 December 2025.
New Road Tax Structure (Effective 1 Jan 2026)
From 2026 onwards, a new, cheaper road tax structure based on kilowatt (kW) output will be enforced.
Important: The old table (which charged RM1,024 for >150kW) has been abolished. The government has introduced a new “Block-Based” system that is significantly more affordable to encourage EV adoption.
| Out put | Base Rate | Surcharges |
|---|---|---|
| 50 kw and below | RM 20 | N/A |
| 50KW TO 60KW | RM44 | N/A |
| 60KW TO 70KW | RM56 | N/A |
| 70KW TO 80KW | RM72 | N/A |
| 80KW TO 90KW | RM160 | RM0.32 PER 0.05KW |
| 90KW TO 100KW | RM224 | RM0.25 PER 0.05KW |
| 100KW TO 125KW | RM274 | RM0.50 PER 0.05KW |
| 125KW TO 150KW | RM524 | RM1.00 PER 0.05KW |
| 150KW AND ABOVE | RM1024 | RM1.35 PER 0.05KW |
Note: The new structure ensures that even high-performance EVs pay significantly less road tax than their petrol-engine equivalents.
Conclusion
Tesla remains a dominant force in Malaysia’s EV landscape. With the Model 3 and Model Y officially available at competitive prices, and the Cybertruck on the horizon, interest is at an all-time high. Furthermore, the revised 2026 road tax structure removes the fear of high annual fees, making EV ownership more sustainable than ever.
